The Creative Area
This is where the fun happens. I set up this space to meet specific needs and to make the creative process easier. The drawing table and easel are set up directly opposite each other, with my work chair easily accessable for both. I work on a 60 inch drawing table with 2 color balanced work lights. The lower shelf of the table holds a printer and the scanner. To the right of the drawing table is an old computer which I use for scanning, creating perspective drawings and arranging compositions. Below the computer is a small file cabinet which holds reference files and drawings. Above the drawing table is a large mirror which I use to check my work. My drawing table is rarely this neat! It is usually cluttered with drawings and reference material for whatever project I may be working on.
Directly opposite the drawing table is my easel. I have even modified the easel to meet specific needs - I've added a brush holder and a booster stand to hold small and medium sized canvases. To the left of the easel is a small cabinet and display easel, both of which come in handy for holding reference material while I am working. I am right handed so naturally my palette table is on my right when I work. Above the palette table is a display board which I use to hang my perspective and compositional drawings so that I can easily refer to them as I am painting. Even the booster stand on the easel is utilized for holding reference photos!
The painting area is illuminated by a combination of incandescent and flourescent bulbs for a better color balance. Notice that there is no artwork on the wall behind the easel. This is so that I won't have any visual distractions immediately behind my paintings while I am working. |
