Young Eagle

Young Eagle is an aircraft portrait of Albatros DII, serial 481/16. Richthofen is believed to flown this machine during his early career as a single-seater pilot with Jasta 2. Several photographs dating from autumn of 1916, while Jasta 2 was stationed at Lagnicourt, France, show Richthofen posing with this machine. This is likely the same machine that Richthofen flew during his epic battle with Lanoe Hawker on November 23.

Based on photographic evidence as well as accounts from Lothar von Richthofen, Manfred likely had the fuselage, empennage, and upper wing crossfields overpainted in “earth tones”.

Here we see Richthofen in his Albatros stalking what may be his next victim, a DH2, diving off in the distance
