“For extraordinary heroism in action in the region of Ligny devant Dun, France , October 4, 1918. Lt. Hunter, while separated from his patrol, observed an allied patrol of 7 planes (Breguets) hard pressed by an enemy formation of 10 planes (Fokker types). He attacked two of the enemy that were harassing a single Breguet and in a decisive fight destroyed one of them; meanwhile, five enemy planes approached and concentrated their fire upon him. Undaunted by their superiority, he attacked and brought down a second plane.”
Such reads the DSC citation describing the events of Oct. 4, 1918 in which Frank "Monk" Hunter came to the aide of a 96 Squadron Breguet under attack by several Fokker DVIIs. |
