Value studies are by-products of Russell's process of creating a large oil painting. Once a perspective drawing for a given aircraft is finished, he overlays the drawing with a sheet of semi-transparent vellum and lays in the shading and values. This allows Russell to figure out how the shadows will fall across the aircraft and where the highlights and darkest shadows (the "shadow core") will be.

Often times, the value studies for larger aircraft come out nicely enough that they are suitable for framing. When that happens, they are posted here for sale. Below is a list of value studies which are currently available.
